11 Days - Caribean Colombia
From jungle to desert - don't miss a thing!

Description:

Day 1: Santa Marta - Minca
The day starts at our office in Bonda, just 20 minutes away from the centre of Santa Marta. This allows you to get used to your motorbike in a rural area where there is almost no traffic. After a nice and easy dirtroad around Bonda, we head towards Minca on a winding tarmac road. Minca is famous for its organic coffee and its fantastic landscapes which we will see on a trip around the hills. The temperatures are perfect and after a visit to the "La Victoria" coffee farm, we can have a little swim in the famous natural pond "Pozo Azul".

Day 2: Minca - Fundación
We leave Santa Marta and follow the highway 90 for some 50 km. We then take a beautiful dirtroad which will lead us up to the coffee villages of San Pedro and San Javier, charming places completely off the touristic track. We will have an authentic lunch up there in the hills together with the local farmers and then find our way back to the valley. If there is time left, we can visit the Gabriel Garcia Márquez museum in Aracataca before we reach our hotel Fundación.

Day 3: Fundación - Mompox
Starting in Fundación on a very short tarmac section and we then follow the beautiful dirtroads through rural Colombia. After a long day of dust and adventure we reach Mompox, the jewel among all the colonial towns of Colombia. Because of its rather isolated location, it is often frequented by tourists. Mompox could be described as the smaller and more beautiful sister of Cartagena. To reach this location we will have to cross the Rio Magdalena in some small canoes which will be already waiting for us.

Day 4: Mompox - Restday
Yesterday we did a long distance, so now it is time to relax and get to know the charming little town Mompox. You are free to do what you want to do: stroll along the riverside, swim in the Río Magdalena do some shopping in the colonial centre, visit the goldsmiths who are famous for their filigran silver jewellery. In the afternoon we will go on a boat and explore the hidden parts of the biggest river in Colombia.

Day 5: Mompox - Pueblo Bello
This is going to be a very hot day. After crossing the Río Magdalena in a small canoe the so-called Johnsons, we hit a long gravel road to Astrea. There we can have a cool lemonade before we go on to the "Ruta del Sol" which we will leave in Bosconia. Some minutes after leaving the highway, we will be able to see the Sierra Nevada, this is where we go. Our destination, Pueblo Bello, is a really outstanding and authentic village. It feels a little bit like being in the wild west: cowboys, farmers and indians all over.

Day 6: Pueblo Bello - Roundtrip
The road to Nabusímake is quite demanding, even in a 4x4 Toyota Landcruiser and so you can choose if you go on your motorbike or in the car. The village of Nabusímake is the political, cultural and ceremonial centre of the Arahuac-indians. You will discover a completely different world in a paradise hidden between four mountains and a river. The indians will explain to us why they believe that nature is the mother goddess and how they worship. The famous mochilas are made here out of goat hair, you will see indigenous women working on them whereever you go. Back in our hotel again, we will do a traditional barbecue on the patio with a million stars in the sky above.
Day 7: Pueblo Bello - Riohacha
We head towards the Caribean Coast again to Valledupar, the home of the famous colombian "Vallenato"-music. There is a nice jungle trail to be experienced. Our stay today will be in Riohacha, a nice town with a beautiful beach and lots of indigenous women of the Wayúu tribe who sell their colourful mochilas at the seaside. Enjoy the luxuries of the hotel particularly the shower, because tomorrow we will be in the desert without those facilities.

Day 8: Riohacha - Cabo de la Vela
Let`s go to the desert! On a tarmac road we go to Uribia where we will fill up our gasoline. The way to the Cabo is hot and dusty, but easy to ride. If we are lucky, we might see the impressive sight of the extremely long train of the coal mine "El Cerrejón". Next we leave the straight track and drive through alleys of cactus and salt lakes and then along the coastal line where the desert meets the ocean. In Cabo de la Vela comfortable hammocks are waiting for us. You can chill there in the shadows until the freshly caught fish is ready for dinner.

Day 9: Cabo de la Vela - Rest Day
Today you can decide what to do. There are some places to see like the Pilón de Azucar, a 100 m high viewpoint, and "El Faro", which is the ancient lighthouse. That won`t take all day, so half of the day we do a little tour and the other half you can relax on the beach, sleep in the hammocks, watch the local fisherman who will bring our fish for dinner or have a walk along the beach. If this is not enough action, you can also go kite surfing. Cabo de la Vela is a very famous spot for kite surfing spot, as there is always a little wind.

Day 10: Cabo de la Vela - Palomino
On our way to Palomino we pass through Manaure which is the centre of salt extraction from the sea. The pink salt lakes can be see from a distance which looks amazing. A dirtroad leads us via Riohacha to Palomino, the complete opposite of the remote desert places you have seen. In Palomino you can go riding, swimming or try some watertubing down the river. It is a perfect place to relax and enjoy the jungle as well as the beach. After having been in the regions that are mostly untouched by tourist, you can enjoy this ecotouristic and multicultural meeting point Palomino.

Day 11: Palomino - Santa Marta
A beautiful coastal highway leads us back to Santa Marta. Several viewpoints allow us to stop and admire the unique landscape. Remember: The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is the highest coastal range in the world. In Santa Marta we stay in a nice hotel in the old town. Here we are close to the colourful markets and to the beach. Here you can first buy some souvenirs for your loved ones and then relax and enjoy your Happy Hour on the beach.
